Web 2.0 Storytelling

While reading today’s assignment, I found myself thinking about Web 2.0 in the context of what I like – memes.  See, when you get down to it, memes fit the idea of Web 2.0 perfectly.  Let’s use the fun time killer Manbabies.com as an example.

The author (Kris) accepts submissions to his site (which serve as microcontent), and then readers can comment (which is social media).  I would dare to say that most internet memes require both of these pieces of content.   Internet memes in their typical state are either images or videos (microcontent) that are linked to throughout the internet (social media), and some sites allow commenting (another form of social media.  Indeed, the Three Wolf Moon shirt and Tuscan Whole Milk started out as memes by the social media.  Through this, I would argue that social media is a more important aspect to Web 2.0 than microcontent, simply because what good is a piece of information if no one is interacting with it?  As illustrated by the changing way that instructors teach (more blogging and comments, less lecture and turning in assignments), I am obviously not the only one who thinks this.
